Medium temperature wax is the key material in the production of casting billet. The properties of wax have great influence on the subsequent shell formation of wax mold and the products formed by pouring metal. There are three common medium temperature wax materials on the market: wax, resin and polymer.

1. Wax material: transparent or translucent solid at room temperature, with fixed melting point or narrow solidification temperature range and low viscosity. It can be divided into mineral wax (such as paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, ground wax, lignite wax, etc.), animal and vegetable wax (such as beeswax, insect wax, palm wax, etc.), and artificial wax (such as stearic acid) according to its source.






2. Resin: refers to amorphous organic matter, transparent and fragile solid at room temperature, with no fixed melting point and high viscosity after melting. Rosin and its derivatives and other natural or artificial resins (such as petroleum resin, terpene resin, etc.) are commonly used.






3. Polymer (high polymer): refers to a polymer with a molecular weight greater than 10000. Polyolefins (such as polyethylene, vinyl acetate and polystyrene) are usually used in investment casting. Their mechanical properties are much stronger than wax, and their viscosity is higher after smelting.

Among the three commonly used raw materials, wax and resin are the basic components of molding materials, and polymer is the additive.






Investment casting materials are usually two or more kinds of raw materials mixed in a certain proportion. Combine the advantages of various raw materials to meet the requirements of investment casting. It is worth emphasizing that the absence of liquid precipitation should be the basic sign of whether the mold material composition is qualified.






Mold wax: It can be divided into wax based mold materials, resin based mold materials and filling mold materials.

Wax based molding material: represented by paraffin stearic acid and paraffin polyolefin, this molding material has the advantages of simple composition and low cost. Generally, the liquid viscosity is low, which is convenient for dewaxing and recovery. Wax paste is a multiphase system with good fluidity, but the quality and dimensional stability of wax pattern are poor, so water glass shell making process is often used to produce products with low quality requirements. Resin based molding material: This kind of molding material has complex composition and high cost. Generally, the liquid viscosity is high, which is not conducive to dewaxing and recovery. Wax paste is a homogeneous system with poor fluidity, but the wax pattern has good quality and dimensional stability, which can be used to produce high-quality military or commercial precision castings. Most foreign mold materials belong to this type.






Mold filling material: the manufacturer of medium temperature wax uniformly mixes a certain amount of immiscible solid powder or water into the above secondary mold as the filler to reduce the shrinkage and contraction of the wax mold, improve the strength of the wax mold, and improve the injection process. However, the cost is high, the liquid viscosity is high, the dewaxing is difficult, and the recovery and regeneration are inconvenient. It can only be used once, mainly for high-end products.






Water soluble mold materials: mold materials made of materials dissolved in water or water, mainly used for manufacturing wax cores, mold cavities and holes. There are two types: urea group and polyethylene glycol group. The former is cheap, usually free casting, low efficiency and poor effect. The latter is expensive, has good injectability, high efficiency and good effect, and is mainly used to manufacture wax cores with high requirements and complex shapes.
