Medium temperature wax is the key material in casting. The performance of wax has a great influence on the subsequent shell and liquid metal forming products. The following are some relevant knowledge about China's medium temperature wax products:




There are three kinds of medium temperature wax materials commonly used: wax materials, resin materials, and polymer.

Wax material: solid with fixed melting point or narrow curing temperature range of opaque or translucent under normal temperature. The viscosity after melting is very small, which can be divided into:




Mineral wax (such as paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, paraffin wax, lignite wax, etc.).




Animal and vegetable wax (such as beeswax, insect wax, palm wax, etc.).




Artificial wax (e.g. stearic acid)

Resin: refers to the transparent brittle solid at room temperature, which has no fixed melting point and has high viscosity after melting. Rosin and its derivatives and other natural or artificial resins (such as petroleum resin, terpene resin, etc.) are commonly used resins.

High molecular polymer (polymer): refers to high molecular polymer with molecular weight greater than 10000. Polyethylene, EVA, polystyrene and other polyolefins are mainly used in investment casting. Their mechanical properties are greater than the strength and toughness of wax, and the viscosity after melting is higher.




Wax and resin are the basic components of three commonly used raw materials, and polymers are additives.




Investment casting mold materials are usually mixtures of two or more of the above materials in a certain proportion. The final goal of preparing die materials is to combine the advantages of various raw materials to achieve complementary advantages to meet the requirements of melt casting. It is worth noting that the liquid without precipitates should be the basic symbol of whether the mold composition is qualified.




Model wax: it is used to make model wax (wax pattern), which can also be divided into wax based pattern, resin based pattern and filler pattern.




Wax based die materials: represented by paraffin stearic acid and paraffin polyolefin. The general composition of this mold material is relatively simple and the cost is low. Liquid viscosity is usually small, easy to dewaxing and recovery. Wax paste is a multi-phase system with good fluidity, but the quality and dimensional stability of wax mold are poor, which is mainly processed with water glass shell with low production quality requirements.




Resin based mold material: the composition of this mold material is generally complex and the cost is high. Liquid viscosity is usually large, which is not conducive to dewaxing and recovery. The wax paste belongs to the phase system with poor fluidity, but the wax mold quality and dimensional stability are good. It is mainly processed with silica sol or ethyl silicate shell and used for military or commercial precision casting. The production quality requirements are high. Most foreign molds belong to this type.




Filling mold: a certain amount (20%~40%) of solid powder or water is uniformly mixed into the above type II mold as the filler to reduce the shrinkage and shrinkage of the wax mold, improve the strength, and improve the waxing process. However, the cost is high, the liquid viscosity is large, the dewaxing is difficult, and it is not convenient for recovery/regeneration. It can only be used once, mainly for high-end products.




Water soluble mold material: mold material made of water soluble or broken materials, mainly used for making wax cores, wax mold cavities and forming holes. There are two types of the former: urea based and polyethylene glycol based. The former is cheap, usually free casting, low efficiency and poor effect. It is mainly used to manufacture wax cores with low requirements and simple shapes; The latter is expensive, can be pressed and injection molded, with high efficiency and good effect. They are mainly used to manufacture wax cores with high requirements and complex shapes.
